Rare Clay Comal no. 2 / Comal de Barro con Manchas - Oaxaca, San Marcos Tlapozola

$85.00

This handcrafted comal, made by artisan Norma, boasts a unique black spotted pattern created during the firing process in the oven. When the comal is fired, sticks and branches sear to the surface, leaving behind these distinctive markings, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind.

This style of comal is typical of Oaxaca, known for its strong red, sturdy ceramic. The sloped edges of the griddle are perfect for toasting chiles and spices, a crucial step in creating a flavorful Oaxacan mole. The surface of the comal allows you to see the hand of the maker, adding a personal touch to each piece. Additionally, the underside is porous for optimal heat distribution.

Beyond its functionality, this beautiful comal can also be used as a gorgeous serving platter or plate.

Poctli recommends treating the comal with cal (a traditional seasoning) before use. It can be used on both electric and gas stovetops, and even over open flames on an open hearth.

Please note:

  • The diameter is approximately 13 inches, and slight variations occur due to the handmade nature of the product.

  • Crafted from lead-free clay for safe cooking.

  • Suitable for stovetop or direct flame use.
